Sherry Jean Hamilton

1946 - 2017

Sherry Jean Hamilton BEDFORD--Sherry Jean Hamilton, loving wife, mother and grandmother passed from this life and entered the full glory of her Creator, Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, after an extended illness. She was surrounded in love by her family and passed gently and peacefully. She was a lady of great faith and knew the ultimate healer was the Great Physician. SERVICE: A worship service in praise of God and in celebration for the gift of Sherry's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at Martin United Methodist Church, 2621 Bedford Road, Bedford, Texas. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be directed to Martin United Methodist Church, H-E-B ISD Education Foundation, Texas Heath Resources Foundation or a charity of your choice. Sherry loved her church, Martin United Methodist, and was engaged with various activities, including the Apple Corp Sunday School Class, Bible studies, and the annual fall festival known as Lord's Acre. Sherry was the "light" of the household and kept her family grounded. She loved watching her children participate in their activities rather it be Wes playing or umpiring baseball or Anne raising and showing livestock. She followed each of her grandchildren in their individual activities and her house was a collage of their pictures. She loved to travel with her family and making scrapbooks of each trip. Sherry spent her professional life devoted to education. She retired in 2012 from the Grapevine Colleyville Independent School District (GCISD), as a gifted and talented teacher at Grapevine Elementary School. Prior to that she taught at Dove and Cannon Elementary, also in GCISD. During her tenure at GCISD, she assumed various leadership positions and served on numerous committees. She was a master teacher often called upon to lead staff development. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year at Dove Elementary and was recognized by the Texas Association of Social Studies Teachers for her commitment to social studies education. She was most proud of projects such as, the Grapevine Traveling Trunk, which contained artifacts of Grapevine's early days, a celebration to honor police and fireman titled Heroes for Heroes, and Young Author Days, which taught students how to improve their writing. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, in 1946, she was a 1965 graduate of Sunset High School, and a graduate of the University of North Texas in 1969. She was a member of Alpha Chi and Delta Kappa Gamma. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Peggy Gentry. SURVIVORS: Sherry is survived by her husband, Garry, of 49 years; son, Wesley and his wife, Carrie; daughter, Anne Kimmey and her husband, Kelley; her grandchildren, Tyler and Zachary Griffeth, and Austin and Ally Hamilton; sister, Beth Boulware; and various cousins, nieces and nephews.
