Bicyclist dies after being run over by van

July 9, 2014|By David Harris, Orlando Sentinel

A 66-year-old man on a bicycle was killed Wednesday when he swerved into the path of a van and was run over, according to FHP.

The man was riding the bicycle, which had a motor attached to the back, north on Apopka Vineland Road just before 2 p.m. when he tried to make a left on Balboa Drive, FHP said. Instead the bicyclist made a U-turn onto the southbound side into the path of a van driven by a 41-year-old Ocoee woman, FHP said.

The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was struck and thrown from the bicycle and was run over, FHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van was uninjured.

I was so sadden to hear about Donny.  I send my prayers to his family.  I have great memories of summers at the city pool across from his house.  We spent all summer down at the pool swimming and playing all kinds of games.  You will be missed.

They Called The Wind Mariah

“Because a song can take you back instantly to a moment, or a place, or even a person, no matter what else has changed in you, or the world, that one song stays the same, just like that moment.”

                                                                                                              ~ Sarah Dessen

Sunset High School talent show, 1965.  Bill White and I talked Donny into singing; he didn't want to do it, in fact, he was scared to death.  As Mr. White and I stood in the wings, we witnessed the most moving rendition of They Called The Wind Mariah.  Not only did he sing it well, but he played the heck out of his guitar; broke some strings, in fact!  Donny got a standing ovation that day.

I think of Donny when I hear the song and remember fondly the emotions connected with that day.  Donny was proud, I was happy for him, and Bill White had tears in his eyes.  Precious memories, indeed.

Play on Donny; play on!

I'm so sorry to hear about this tragedy!  Donny and I grew up across the street from Margaret B Henderson Elementary School and played and went swimming at the pool there all our early years!  Like Elaine, I was so proud when he became cheerleader at Sunset. He was always friendly. So sorry for his family and the son he moved to Orlando to be near!  We will miss you!

What an absolute tragedy!  So full of life and such a truly nice guy!  Donny is one of those people you just never forget!  He will be missed by many!  My prayers are with his family, because I believe that Donny is smiling and making everyone happier in Heaven. God bless you, Donny, for being "one of the good guys!"

There are quite a few of us that had the chance to know Donny for all but 6 to 7 years of our lives.  We started at M.B. Henderson, then W.E. Griner and then Sunset.  We all have stories to remember of Donny.  The best i have is that Donny and I liked to dance.  His parents were members of Oak Cliff Country Club and they would hold a few times a year pre-teen dances.  Donny asked me to quite a few of those dances.  We always had so much fun.  And won 45 rpm records in the dance contest.  Those were fun nights.  Donny we will miss you so much, but thanks for all the wonderful memories.  Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.  Much love  -

Janine

Doesn't matter how long ago it was.  Seems only a minute ago many of us were roaming the halls of W.E. Greiner.  That's where I had the honor of meeting Donny.  He was an immediate friend and though I haven't seen him in years the pain I feel over his death is enormous.  Rest in peace old friend.  We will always love you.

What great memories we recently shared. From Henderson to Greiner to Sunset, and that 1 year as roommates at North Texas!! I am glad we were able to reconnect and share how our faith started in Sunday School at Elmwood Methodist would last us a lifetime. I know you are playing your guitar, singing and keeping everyone in heaven entertained.
